The Construction Manager is responsible to ensure safe, efficient and productive delivery of capital projects assigned and has primary responsibility for providing construction management and for identifying key resources and providing direction in order to meet project objectives. The Construction Manager will also ensure appropriate management, customer and stakeholder involvement throughout the life of the project.

 

Responsibilities

Ensures superior environmental, health and safety performance on capital projects. Coordinate project teams comprised of representatives from internal and external stakeholder groups, internal and external resources as required. Executes the project scope and priorities with the cross-functional project team.

Supports the Project Management Office reporting requirements by providing Quality, Schedule and Cost (QSC) reports as directed by the Project Manager, eg.British Columbia Utilities Commission, weekly/monthly and/or Quarterly reports to FortisBC management, executive and Board.

Manages and communicates a clear vision of the project’s objectives and motivates the project team to achieve them.

Compiles an accurate construction estimates, detailed project plans and schedules, with the assistance of FortisBC’s business units and other involved stakeholders. Assists in the preparation and administration of contracts.

Analyzes and communicates risks, establishes contingency plans for the project. Manages change control for projects. Provides tracking and reporting progress to plan to the Project Manager. Analyzes performance to plan and makes recommendations for adjustments consistent with project objectives.

Manages relationships with projects stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and issues.

Contributes and collaborates with the Project Manager to manage the financial aspect of projects: budgeting, actual to estimate variance, etc.

 

Requirements

Education and Experience:

 

Requires a university degree with a minimum of 3-5 years supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education (trade/technologist certification), training and experience, with a supplementary education in project management, finance or accounting.

 

Electrical utility (substation, transmission and distribution and generation) experience in project construction highly desirable

 

Technical Competencies:

 

  • Demonstrated excellence in presentation and written communication skills
  • Proven negotiating skills within a context of political sensitivity and conflicting interests
  • Competent Microsoft word/excel/project skills required
  • Ability to plan and facilitate meetings
  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of and competency in construction management process required, including scheduling and resourcing, scope control, quality management, financial management and record keeping.
  • Adaptability and flexibility including ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity and change
  • Experience interpreting contracts and negotiating with contracts desired
